Shishito Peppers
Shishito peppers are popular in Japan. They have a grassy pepper flavor with sweet-hot citrus notes. It is generally a mild pepper variety, the heat level can vary. It’s said that about 1 in 10 peppers has a hot kick. You can keep these simple or be creative. I’ve had these as an appetizer at quite a few restaurants and love them. You can’t find them just anywhere. I was happy to see that Trader Joe’s carries them in a 6 ounce bag. They also have a simple recipe on the back. I did mine in a cast iron skillet, but you can also cook them in a saute’ pan, grill them on the BBQ, or deep fry them. These require light prep and perfect for any appetizer or side dish.

  1. Rinse your peppers and pat dry. Get out a saute’ pan or cast iron skillet.
  2. Simply blister the peppers in a saute pan or cast iron skillet over high heat with a bit of olive or or sesame oil. Once you start seeing the blister charred look, they will be ready to eat. Sprinkle with salt and enjoy! You can omit the salt and dip them in soy sauce as well.
